Description

"The Free State gladdens my heart, no matter what my mood. When I am here I feel that nothing can shut me in, that my thoughts can roam as far as the horizons." - Nelson Mandela

Franshoek Mountain Lodge lies in a secluded valley in the heart of cherry growing district of the Eastern Free State. Located in the foothills of the majestic Maluti Mountains this is a region of contrasts, lush and verdant in summer and snow capped in winter.

Ours is a dramatic landscape of sheer sandstone cliffs, which give way to gentle green slopes scattered with an abundance of wild flowers.

The lodge is surrounded by an area of exceptional beauty with caves and waterfalls to explore, dams to fish in and walking trails to please everyone from the casual stroller to the serious hiker.

With only ten rooms, we provide an intimate, easy going, family friendly lodge which appeals to all generations. The heart of the lodge is a charming, thatched sandstone building where guests can relax at the bar or enjoy a delicious meal; Thai food is the house speciality. On the cooler evenings, a roaring log fire creates the perfect atmosphere for an evening of games or music and many guests find themselves getting to know strangers who end up as enduring friends.

The bedrooms are situated in the old farmhouse which is attached to the lodge and each has its own access to our beautiful gardens which are home to a menagerie of creatures including tortoises, geese, cats, dogs, a donkey and a pot bellied pig.

Up behind the guest buildings is a spectacular, sandstone edged swimming pool-with-a-view where lunches can be served in summer. In the evenings we fire up our African Steam Hut where you can detox and take a dip in a truly remarkable setting. The pool area is enclosed, so parents can relax, knowing that their children are safe. A babysitting service can be arranged and baby monitors are also available on request.

The lodge prides itself on its well stocked library and a treatment space where various therapies such as reiki and hypnotherapy are practiced.
