DescriptionAt the foot of Imperani mountain with a beautiful view of the Maluti mountains of Lesotho - in winter covered with snow. A most scenic area. The Caledon river divides Ficksburg in South Africa from the mountainous Lesotho. Two quite different lifestyles in these two neighboring countries.The Caledon border post at Ficksburg is the nearest border post to the majestic Katse dam in Lesotho. Ficksburg, known for it's annual Cherry festival and in the hub of cherry land, is on the Highlands route R26. The hotel is opposite the historic sandstone town hall, a declared national museum, with general Johan Fick's tomb next to it. General Fick, a famous Boer war leader, was the founder of Ficksburg. There are various other most interesting sandstone buildings (national monuments) in Ficksburg inter alia the Dutch Reformed church, Pellisier Art Gallery and the one room C.R. Swart Jail where the 19 year old Blackie Swart, who later became the first State President of South Africa, had been jailed during World War I, for taking a photo of the Town Guard (48 mounted and armed boers). The hotel's information centre furnishes particulars about the Lesotho Highlands Water Project of which there is one of the few permanent exhibitions in South Africa, as well as several video's about it. There is also information about the Pierneef's Friezes right around the inside of a local school hall, scenery and game drives by quad bikes, flights over Lesotho and Katse dam, Ox wagon drives and much more!
